Medical Clinic
& Home for HIV+ Children, Mumbai
A Good Shepherd
Homes program, this Medical Clinic
has a capacity of 50 beds where
injured, malnourished and sick young
people are treated. This program
also provides a Home for 25 HIV+
children.
Many children
in Mumbai with HIV/AIDS are orphaned
and cannot access any
medical/practical help. Around
500,000 people sleep daily on
Mumbai’s streets, 110,000 of these
are children. Many of these are
homeless and fall prey to
pedophiles, viruses, infections and
injuries. Scores of emergencies go
without any medical help and
consequently large numbers of
children die prematurely. Many
children with HIV/AIDS are rejected
by hospitals as well as family due
to fear and the stigma attached to
AIDS. Consequently these children
end up abandoned on the city
streets.
A full-time
team of 35 staff are presently
working with 130 disadvantaged
children in the Mumbai-Pune area.
The team that operates the Medical
project network with other NGOs in
Mumbai to help ex-patients acquire
vocational skills in order to find
employment and permanent housing.
This enables many immediate medical
needs to be met, but also young
people without accommodation find
the means to make a new start in
life. Furthermore, many children
with HIV+/AIDS get the treatment
they so richly deserve.
